Invigorating: Sean John 3 AM Review

 

Good evening! I hope you folks are doing well tonight. I am trying to catch up on a ton of reviews, so you will be seeing a lot of content from me. I will have a lot of non-mainstream stuff coming up soon. 

I always saw people speak about this fragrance, but I never picked it up. I had a friend send it to me, so thank you to that friend for the gift. He also sent me Lagerfeld Bois de Vetiver, which might not be reviewed until the spring.

Happy summer days with a refreshing sparkling drink.

Long summer days on the beach in the shade. 

That first blast of cold water as you jump into a lake. 

The cool spring dew.

The feeling of wearing a white linen shirt on a hot summer day. 


The Scent 

3 AM opens with invigorating sparkling bergamot with ice-cold tonic water. A slight touch of fresh and juicy orange adds to the refreshing nature of this composition. I think there is a little bit of cardamom in here, but it is used to make the composition feel effervescent. Cardamom is often used for that in these types of fragrances. 

As the heart emerges, a beautifully fresh and slightly creamy fig leaf comes out. This is the best fig note I have smelled in a fragrance within this price range. It just smoothens out the blend. I am a huge fan of fig. My boy, Carlos Colom, got me into it and now I am obsessed with the note. He also got me to expand my horizons into licorice and anise, but that is a story for another time. 

In the deep dry down, it retains that a little bit of the tonic water, but it's mostly a very soft and clean leather note with that fig leaf and a pinch of spice. It's still on the refreshing side. It doesn't turn cheap and generic in the dry down, which is shocking considering the price of this perfume. 


My Opinion

3 AM is a fragrance that completely blew me away. I review a lot of niche and indie stuff and I love supporting those brands, but this fragrance seriously captured my heart. This is a fragrance that instantly makes me happy when I spray it. Yes, the atomizer is amazing. The hype is real on that.

The way 3 AM comes together with its fresh and cooling sensations that are grounded by leather and not woods, makes it read as a masculine offering. It's mostly a summer or spring scent, but I have been wearing it in 40F weather just fine as well. 

Let's talk about performance for a bit. I am not someone who speaks on this often, but I will for this one. I think most people are not judging this one accurately. I did the same thing. I wore it and it lasted 4-6 hours in the peak of summer. However, I went through a phase when I was having a rough time in my life, so I wasn't wearing many perfumes. After around 2 weeks of not wearing something, I picked this 3 AM to uplift my mood. To my surprise, this fragrance was still very noticeable after 8 hours. This fragrance seems like it lasts a lot longer than we think. We are just used to spraying heavy fragrances which probably make it so we can't smell this one in the heart and dry down.  I was certainly pleased to find this out because I adore the smell of this perfume.

I was also surprised by how unique it is. I wouldn't say it has niche appeal, but it doesn't smell like anything I have tried on the market. The blending of notes is so smooth and well-composed. I would expect this fragrance to be from a high-end designer brand if I smelled it blindly. 

You can purchase 100ml of this fragrance for under 20 USD wherever you might look. I am not sure if everyone will love it like I do, so I would suggest sampling if you can, but it's not an expensive blind buy if you go that route. I think it's pretty safe, but I know not everyone has the cash to just throw at fragrances, so don't solely take my word on it. My tastes are not yours. I like it so much that I bought the body wash, deodorant, and aftershave to go with it. 


Conclusion

Not Worth the Hype: Azzaro Ginger Lover Review

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen! I hope everyone is doing well today. I am doing just fine. I have been testing a lot of stuff and dealing with something in the family, so I haven't had as much time to write lately. I should have a few new reviews published over the course of the next few days. 

I saw a few YouTube videos hyping Azzaro's Ginger Lover, so I decided to purchase a decant of it. The fragrance contains ginger, lime, and vetiver. I love all three of those. Well, I will give you my opinion in a bit.

I purchased my decant from Mario Sharvae who is a legitimate seller and has great prices. One of my bottles leaked and another one the atomizer broke. He sent me a new atomizer and 10ml of MFK's Masculin Pluriel to make it right. Both of those things were out of his control, but he still made it right. So, I can recommend doing business with him. I will use him again if he has what I want. My review of this fragrance isn't a reflection on him. He didn't make the fragrance. 

Just to be clear, I have no relationship with Mario and this is not sponsored. I purchased the decants from him. I was just pleased with my transaction and his willingness to make it right, so I thought I would give him a shoutout. 

Let's see where Ginger Lover failed for me. Let's get into it!


The Scent

Ginger Lover starts out with a fresh and spicy lime accord accentuated by a prominent ginger note. The opening is actually quite beautiful and it's my favorite part of the fragrance. After 30 minutes the lime dies down and becomes barely noticeable in the back, only signified by a very slight fresh sweetness in the dry down. What you then get is just a dry ginger accord with woody vetiver. There isn't greenness in this vetiver. It's only dry and woody. It's certainly a more fantasy version of vetiver. 

This woody ginger lasts for the life of the fragrance, which lasts around 8 hours in total. This is marketed towards men, but I think women could wear this as well. This is a fragrance that can survive high heat as well. 


My Opinion

The opening of Ginger Lover is the best part. the dry down is simple, boring, and uninspired. Does it smell bad? No, but it's just flat. There is nothing exciting once the lime dies down. Maybe they should have used lemon or grapefruit as a longer-lasting citrus note to give this one some life. 

I honestly don't get why people hyped this one. This fragrance has no soul and it's just a money grab to me. It could have been so much more interesting than it is. This is exactly the reason why I always tell people to buy decants before committing to a full bottle, even though this one is inexpensive. 

Now, if you love Ginger Lover, then wear it. I am not trying to insult your tastes or what you like. I am just giving my personal opinion about it. I tried to come up with a good story for this one, but the fragrance didn't inspire me at all. I don't like doing negative reviews because it's much more difficult to write about things that don't inspire you. However, with this one being hyped up recently, I figured I might want to give a contrasting opinion to what others are saying out there. 

My overall take is that it's not a bad fragrance, but it's not exciting. It's certainly not one I will be purchasing a full bottle of. There are much more interesting ginger and citrus-based fragrances, even in the same price range. Azzaro Pour Homme still holds the crown in the Azzaro lineup for me. 


Conclusion

Givenchy Gentleman EDP Review

Good evening everyone! Much love to all of my returning views and all of the new ones! I hope everyone is doing well. If you would be so kind as to hit the blue follow button on the right-hand side then I would be most appreciative of it. Tonight I will be reviewing a fragrance released in 2018, Givenchy Gentleman EDP. I think it is just now getting recognition because of the cooler weather. Buckle up folks, let's get into it!

Presentation

I only have a decant of this, but the bottle is black and looks heavy. Also, I hear the cap clicks into place. My decant is from Mark at www.myfragrancesamples.com


The Scent 

Opening 

This fragrance opens up sweet and balsamic with some warm spice. It's quite rich. The Iris is the powerhouse here. It is lipsticky, but not to the point that Dior Homme is. So, it's not as powdery and you won't smell like makeup. The tolu balsam gives off a bit of the sweet ambery vibe.

Dry Down

The dry down brings in some chocolate vibes from the patchouli. It's similar to the type in Mugler's A*Men, but not nearly as strong. The vanilla and tolu balsam is still strong, along with the iris. The vanilla is no doubt amplified by the tonka bean. I get some more of the warm spices like cloves and cinnamon than others are reporting along with the black pepper. The pepper is mild and warm. It's not sneeze-worthy at all. So, what you end up getting is iris, sweet vanilla, with some ambery nuances accented by warming spices.

Performance

The performance is decent for me. Around 7-8 hours on the skin with 2 of those being projection. It does leave a nice sillage trail. For the price of this one, it's not a bad performer and you can certainly get much worse.

When to Wear it

This one is way too sweet to wear in anything but late fall and winter. It's more of a night time fragrance to my nose. but it could work during the day. This is a seductive fragrance that is a good option for a date. This fragrance has class and allure and should be worn when you want to exemplify that.


Overall Impression

I agree with some other reviews that this is one of the best releases of 2018. However, I have not smelled all of them yet. It's sweet, seductive, and it does its job well. It's a very solid release and well worth it once it hits discounters.

 I get the comparisons to Valentino Uomo Intense and Dior Homme Intense, but this is still a different fragrance. I like it better than those two. The warm spices really set this one apart for me. It just seems like a fragrance with more depth than the other two. It's more intriguing. It does share a very slight similarity to the balsamic feel of Davidoff Amber Blend, but only in a minor fashion. I do believe Amber Blend is a better fragrance than this one, but that is just my opinion.

Dior Sauvage EDT Review

Hello ladies and gentleman! I hope everyone is doing well this evening. Tonight I have a review that I have been putting off for forever, Dior Sauvage. Due to its popularity and hate, I have steered away from reviewing it...Plus every other reviewer has a review of it. That's okay though. I do have it, so I might as well review it. Let's get into it!


Presentation

I really like the bottle on this one. The dark blue fade on the front looks gorgeous. I really love the magnetic cap as well. I have often times just sat here and played with it...Yeah, I know I am a kid at heart 😆. This atomizer on this is the best one that I have ever seen. It shoots a ton of juice out and makes a hissing sound. That's pretty awesome.

Scent

Opening
You get a fresh dose of bergamot, lots of spice, and ambroxan in the opening. It's aggressive, forward, and unbashful. It tells you what it is right from the start. The pepper is very strong. If I smell it too much in the opening then I go anosmic to it shortly after.

Dry Down
The woodiness comes into play in the dry down. The ambroxan acts more like an amber now. It's still strong and peppery. So, you end up with a spicy and woody amber with some sparkling bergamot at the top.

Longevity
I get around 10 hours with it at least. I go anosmic to it because of the pepper. My nose is very sensitive to pepper. I have had people comment on it 10 hours after I applied. It seems to project for a good 3-4 hours as well. It also leaves a pretty massive sillage trail.

When to Wear it
This fragrance is super versatile and can be worn year-round and for almost any situation. I personally think it's too aggressive for formal wear though. It can be used for dates, clubbing, casual, work or whatever else you want to use it for. the EDP is slightly better for cold weather, but the EDT does fine in that as well.

Overall Impression

It's not a particularly great smelling fragrance when you smell it on your wrist. It's okay though. However, what you smell on yourself is not what others smell. I think this one might be popular because they might have put pheromones in it, There is no evidence to support this, however, Eau Sauvage was the first fragrance to have pheromones in it and I wouldn't be surprised if this one did as well, given its popularity with women.

Why is it so popular besides my thoughts on possible pheromones? It's very synthetic and messy. Its aggressive pepper, strong sparkling bergamot, and in your face ambroxan...Because it just works. On paper you look at the notes and think that it couldn't possibly work...it does. Love it or hate it, there is no denying that this works if you are seeking compliments.

It's not my favorite fragrance by far, but I do wear it when I am looking for compliments. Its good at what it does do. which is getting compliments.

Also, on a side note...if you use more than two sprays you might kill someone. I ran into a guy in a grocery store that was wearing like 8 sprays of this and it was nauseating to me smell him 3 aisles down from me. I am not sure if it was 8 sprays, but he oversprayed for sure. Please don't be that guy. Have pity on those of us who are sensitive to pepper 😆

Victorinox Swiss Army House Review

Hello ladies and gentleman! I hope today is finding you in good spirits! Today I am reviewing a house that is normally associated with a multi-tool style knife like you see in the above picture, but they have tried their hands at making fragrances. I have two fragrances from them which I will briefly cover in my review. Let's get into it!


The Fragrances

Victorinox Swiss Army(VSA for short from here on out) has come out with a line of fragrances for both men and women.  Their first fragrance was released in 1997 and goes by the name of Swiss Army. The fragrance house seeks to encapsulate the smells of the outdoors to recall you back to those times of wonders and triumph.


Swiss Army Forest

Presentation

The bottle is pretty cool. I like the whole wood(although it's not real wood) cap and base theme and the pine colored bottle. The atomizer works very well also. No complaints as far as that goes.

The Scent

The official VSA website describes this fragrance as such, " Inspired by the forest and suffused with a sense of adventure, the Swiss Army Forest Collection combines the fresh, uncompromising air with the unrelenting strength of the trees. So you can enjoy nature, wherever the journey takes you."

Going off those notes...this sounds like a nice foresty fragrance. I mean how can you mess this up? Well, sadly they did. The opening isn't bad. It's actually decent with a blast of woods and lemon. However, the dry down smells like a cheap knock-off of Irish Spring shower gel. Granted, Irish Spring is very budget friendly already. I do like Irish Spring, but this one just smells worse. I mentioned some of my distaste for this one in my "5 Least Favorite Fragrances in My Collection" post, so I won't go into massive detail here. You can read that article here if you'd like.

It's just overall a messy fragrance to my nose that doesn't resemble anything in the natural world. Some people seem to like it and it does have good longevity and projection. It's just not something I am going to wear. I tried to love it, as you can see by the juice level, but I just couldn't. Maybe if I go back to it in the warmer months it will be better.

Swiss Army Rock

Presentation

The bottle looks nice. However, the VSA shield at the bottom is supposed to look like a rock. It's cheap plastic and it was glued on. So, the glue gave out and now there is a sticky residue on the bottle and around where the emblem was placed. The atomizer also sticks in the down position after you spray it. I get that sometimes a fragrance company might have an issue and bad bottles do get out, but 2 problems with one bottle? That is poor quality control to me. The atomizer does spray well for the first spray, until you have to pull it back up to spray it again.

The Scent

The VSA website describes this one as such, "Elegant, strong, authentic – ROCK brilliantly combines all of these virtues. The fragrance impresses by its vibrant, spicy note with a mineral accent that gives it a distinct elegance."

This fragrance isn't as disliked as the Forest one. However, it's still not good. To me, it smells like stale bubble gum that has been sitting on a rock in the sun. There is nothing elegant about it to me. It does have a mineral accord and I am not sure which note is making that happen. It has a sweetness to it, but not a good kind. It's a subdued kind that hides behind the mineral accord. Some people might enjoy this one. It is somewhat different, but it's just not for me.


Overall House Impression

As you can tell from my reviews, I am not a fan of this house. I have only tried two of their fragrances though, but these two did leave a bad taste in my mouth based on fragrance quality and the quality control of their bottles. Such a shame that a company that is known for revolutionizing the knife industry did this in the fragrance industry. These bottles retail for $56 for 100ml. You can get them on Fragrancenet for much cheaper. Around $20 each. I would advise against it, but maybe you will like them and have a better experience.

I will say this though, I have Cuba Prestige Black, which is supposedly a clone of Swiss Army(the original fragrance that they made). It's okay. It's a pretty safe and generic scent, but it smells good. So, if Swiss Army smells like that then maybe I just bought the worst ones from the house. I will have to pick up Swiss Army and test for myself at some point.

Valentino Uomo Review

Hello ladies and gentleman! I hope today find in a fantastic mood and very blessed! Today I am going to review a fragrance that I actually finished a decant of(which is somewhat rare), so it's one I like, but no longer have. So, forgive me if I forget any of the notes in this one. Let's get into it!

Presentation

I only have a decant from Scentbird. No, this video is not sponsored by them because I don't suggest them. Most of you folks know what a Scentbird decant looks like so I won't go into it. The actual bottle of this fragrance is certainly unique and aesthetic though!

Scent

Opening
This fragrance is all about the mid notes in the opening. It gives off an almost Nutella type vibe. Given the notes in the mid, it's understandable. I only get a slight bit of coffee, it's used more to round out the chocolate I think. Very nice sweet gourmand opening with a slight nuance of bergamot.

Dry Down
This is where it gets interesting. It gets less gourmand-y(yes, I know, Nutella was great while it lasted) and more masculine. Some refined, woody, and tame cedar add a touch of elegant spice, while the smooth leather adds its masculine punch to the mix. Wait, what's that? Some sort of soapy accord? Yes, this fragrance does have a bit of soapiness to it. Not like the intense version and it's not dominant, but it adds elegance to it. The myrtle is responsible for it. You know...I grew up in SC and have been to Myrtle Beach many times and I don't recall myrtle trees smelling like that. Oh well...What you are left with it a somewhat sweet leather with some soapiness and a bit of spice and wood. It's pretty nice.

Longevity
I hear the 2018 batches are weaker, but I cannot attest to that. The batch I had was good for at least 8-9 hours with a nice arm's length scent bubble. Also leaving an impressive sillage trail, considering it's an EDT.

When to Wear it
Cool to cold weather. This fragrance will cut through the cold. I think in the warmer weather it would be too sweet and the leather would come out too strongly. I would wear this mostly dressed up a bit. Even if it's only business casual. This fragrance has some class and I don't think a t-shirt and jeans embodies its style very well,

Overall Impression

This is a very good fragrance. It's not one of my favorites, but I certainly think it's full bottle worthy, even though I don't have one yet. These days it often gets overshadowed by its younger brother, Uomo Intense, and its resemblance to the ever popular Dior Homme Intense. I don't think that is fair for this fragrance. It has character and can stand out its own. The gourmand-y feel certainly makes it feel different. Some people say this smells like Dior Homme, but I disagree. Dior Homme is much more powdery, whereas this is smooth. The whole makeup vibe in Dior Homme isn't in Valentino Uomo. They are completely different fragrances to my nose. One day I will do a comparison of the two.

Avon Blue Rush Intense Review

Hello ladies and gentleman! I hope this day finds everyone in good health and very blessed. Today I am covering a fragrance by a company that quite honestly is known for making generic fragrances. However, I believe this one, Avon Blue Rush Intense, is pretty decent.

Presentation

It comes it a dark blue glass bottle with a cheap plastic cap. Blue Rush Intense is inscribed on the top of the cap. The atomizer works fine. If you look at the inside of the bottle at the base, you can see this water ripple type effect. Overall, I think it's a pretty cool bottle, even if it's not a high-quality one.

Scent

Opening
This fragrance opens with a blast of kiwi, clementine, and water notes. The vetiver comes into play as well. It gives it this whole deep ocean feel. It smells like it has depth, unlike many of the Avon fragrances that I have smelled. It's fresh, but it also has some depth to it. This fragrance also has an ozonic feel because of the water notes.

Dry Down
On the dry down, this fragrance is a pretty nice casual aquatic. Still maintaining depth, but more of the woods come out in the phase. It still smells like the deep waters of the ocean, but with a bit more character now. The lavender is used beautifully in creating this sensation.

Longevity
I get around 6 hours with this one. 1 1/2 to 2 hours of projection (about 3 feet), then it nestles to the skin. This is pretty decent considering I get 2-3 hours from most Avon fragrances, although it's still not impressive. It's just okay. It does leave a decent sillage trail as well.

When to Wear
This fragrance is for the summer. It could also get by in spring, but it's best suited for summer. It could be worn in the daytime or at night. Casually only, as most aquatics are.

Overall Impression
It's good, but not great. It is one of the top 3 Avon fragrances I have smelled for men. I have smelled a bunch too. My mom used to work for Avon so, I have around 20 fragrances from them. It's deep, has some character and is great for casual wear. This one was worth the purchase price for me. Sadly, it is discontinued now and near impossible to find. If you do find it, the prices are outrageous. It's worth around $25 to me, so if you can find it around that then give it a shot. Not many collectors will have this one.

Dolce & Gabbana The One EDT Review

Hellos ladies and Gentleman! I hope everyone is optimistic and setting positive New Year's goals for this upcoming year. Today I will be covering something that almost feels like a classic staple at this point, even though it's not that old, Dolce & Gabbana's The One EDT. Let's get into it!

Scent

Opening
You get some woody cedar and tangy grapefruit on the opening, mixed with some cardamon and coriander. Somewhat pungent and strong on the opening spray.

Dry Down
This is where the character of this fragrance takes place. The grapefruit takes a backseat and the dark amber and earthy tobacco take center stage here, also the ginger. You can still get a lot of the cedar and cardamon, but those three are the main players for the rest of the fragrance's lifespan.

Performance
This is where a lot of people disagree on this fragrance. The majority of people say it performs poorly, but I disagree. I think people go anosmic to this one because it is quite strong. I get 6-7 hours out of it. My skin loves tobacco fragrances though. 6-7 hours isn't bad for an EDT. The projection is modest at best. It does project a little for the first hour and a half before settling to a more close to the skin fragrance. I think this is intended. If this fragrance was a projection monster then I think it would lose some of its charm.

When to Wear it
Cool to cold weather. This is a very rich and deep fragrance. It would not smell good in the heat. This is perfect for a date night, but it could also be worn formally or semi-formally. Although it could be worn casually (with a button-up and chinos), I don't think it is best suited for this scenario. It is also worn best at night.

Overall Impression
This one is a legend in its own right. I think the poor performance that some people claim is just them going anosmic. It's a great fragrance, but not totally original. It's safe. This fragrance is dark, mysterious, alluring, and manly. This is gentleman's fragrance and it's for a man with confidence, not one with arrogance. It does lean on the mature side, so I would say 30+ on this one. A lot of people like the EDP more, it's a lot richer and darker, plus better performance, but the EDT doesn't do anything wrong in my book.

Moschino Uomo? Review

Greetings ladies and gentleman! I hope everyone had a fantastically blessed Christmas! My blog posts will still be less frequent than normal until after the new year, then I should be back to posting every other day. Today I am covering a somewhat classic fragrance(It was launched in 1998). Let's get into it!


Notes

Top
Kumquat, Brazilian Rosewood, Aldehydes, Coriander

Cinnamon, Cyclamen, Clary Sage

Base
Cedarwood, Wormwood, Ambergris, Musk

(Basenotes also lists a sunlight accord in the base, which I assume is what Fragrantica lists as aldehydes in the top)


Scent

Opening
Aromatic musky opening with kumquat and musk and cyclamen. The aldehydes are sharp and citrusy here. It has a pretty strong opening, but not offensive at all. Aldehydes are sharp and citrusy here.

Dry Down
This fragrance is pretty linear. It stays as a musky floral for most of the life of the fragrance. the aldehydes get smoother here, lending to the soapy smell. Just a small dash cinnamon and coriander warms this fragrance up just a bit. The fragrance does tame itself a bit and it is more pleasing to the nose at this point.

Performance
I get around 6 hours with this one, an hour or so more on a cooler day. About 2 hours of projection, then it becomes a skin scent for the rest of its lifespan. it leaves a decent scent trail that is lovely. 2-3 sprays will do the trick. It's easy to go anosmic to this one.

When to Wear it
You can wear this one any time of the year like you can with most soapy fragrances. It's a staple in the mild autumns we have here in South Carolina. It's good casually, formal, and even for a date night. A pretty versatile fragrance.

Overall Impression 
A really good fragrance at a bargain price. I think I paid around $22 for 125ml/ It smells more expensive than it is. It is slightly mature, but I don't think it's out of place on a 22-year-old. It has a certain timeless elegance to it. It's an easy dumb reach. I have yet to find anyone who says this smells bad, but I have only found one person who says this smells "Amazing". I have worn this one quite a bit.

My Favorite Designer Fragrance: Burberry Touch

Hello ladies and gentleman! Sorry that I haven't been posting much. The holiday season is quite a busy time of year. I will be posting more often after 2019 hits. I hope everyone is having a blessed and joyous holiday season. Today I will be covering my favorite designer fragrance, Burberry Touch. Let's get into it!


Notes

Top- Violet, Mandarin

Mid- Pepper, Virginia Cedarwood, Oakmoss

Base- Vetiver, White Musk, Tonka


Scent

Burberry Touch opens up with a strong powdery violet with some spicy pepper and a bit of cedar. Musk is also very noticeable. This fragrance is pretty linear. It doesn't change much from the opening to the dry down, but it smells great the entire time. Clean, powdery, musky, and fresh. This fragrance is just clean. That is the best way to describe it. It does have a very powdery violet that can come off as baby powder-like, so if you are not into powdery fragrances then this one is not for you.

I think this fragrance could be worn by a confident woman. It's unisex to my nose. Smelling clean is never a bad thing for either gender and that is why I love this one. However, I do think the cedar and spice make it lean more masculine.

This fragrance is super versatile. People say Aventus, Bleu de Chanel, and Sauvage are versatile, but I think this one beats it. Smelling clean is good year round. This can be dressed up or down. Cold weather or hot weather. This one is a workhorse. You could use it on a date, but I don't think it is best suited for that.

Longevity is really good. 8-9 hours on skin. 2-3 hours of solid projection. A nice scent trail to boot. This fragrance is not shy. It's not offensive either, but I don't suggest going over 4 sprays, this one lasts and projects well for a clean fragrance. Too much of anything is bad, even soap.

This fragrance is fairly cheap too. 50ml for around $30 at Fragrancenet. That is a really good value to me, especially considering how versatile this one is.

A Legendary Classic: Old Spice Classic

Hello everyone! I hope today finds you blessed and joyous in the middle of the holiday season! Today I will be covering another classic, Old Spice. This is on the current formulation. The next few reviews will be on some classics as well. Enjoy!


Presentation
The bottle comes with the classic Old Spice ship on the front. It's plastic. As you can see some of the writing on the front is rubbing off. The cap is a thin plastic as well. Overall, a pretty cheap and uninspired presentation that is nothing like the old glass bottles, but it works. The atomizer is pretty decent.


Notes
Top- Orange, Lemon, Anise, Aldehydes, Nutmeg

Mid- Heliotrope, Carnation, Geranium, Cinnamon, Jasmine, Pimento

Base- Tonka, Musk, Ambergris, Benzoin, Cedar, Vanilla


Scent
Old Spice opens up, as one would think...Spicy. Add some florals and a little sweetness from the anise, orange, and vanilla. Cinnamon, carnation, and nutmeg are the big players here. They come out strongly. The benzoin, musk, and vanilla are very noticeable too. On the dry down the dry spices come out much stronger. This fragrance is classicly masculine and unforgettable. This is what a barbershop fragrance should be, at least to me. 

This formulation is a shadow of the former Old Spice pre-80s, but it still a good fragrance. You can get 120ML for around 8 bucks at Wal-Mart. I still wear it and like it, but it's not what it used to be.

This fragrance is very diverse for what you can use it for. Best suited for the colder wear, but can be used in the warmer months if you go very light on the trigger.

Longevity is about 6 hours on me with about an hour and half of solid projection. It leaves a decent scent bubble. At the price you pay, it's fine. You can afford to reapply. The plastic bottle does make it more portable than a glass one.

A Trip Down Memory Lane: Stetson Cologne Review

Hello ladies and gentleman! I hope this day finds you well and in good health. I am sitting here in an ice storm in South Carolina with a nice cup of mint hot chocolate. Life is good! Today I am going to take us back to my childhood with a fragrance that is quite popular around here...Stetson. Let's get into it!


Presentation
The bottle I have is a special edition splash bottle. So it's a bit different with a western engraving on it. I quite like it. It's a splash, so no atomizer. The screw off cap is difficult to unscrew at times though. Nice classic bottle for the collection, even if you don't like the fragrance.


Notes

Top- Lemon, Lime, Bergamot, Lavender, Clary Sage

Mid- Geranium, Orris Root, Patchouli, Carnation, Jasmine, Vetiver, Cedar

Base- Honey, Tonka, Musk, Amber, Vanilla


Scent

This is a classic fragrance that was first introduced in 1981. Given its age, I am surprised to not find some dry oakmoss in here. Stetson is special to me. I worked on a farm growing up and the guy I worked for wore this. He was a cowboy through and through. Tough, respectful, honest, and honorable. That is what this fragrance reminds me of. He passed away earlier this year. I bought this fragrance and fell in love with it again. I might be biased due to the memories I associate with it though. That is why I prefaced this description with this first. Now, let's get on to the actual scent!

This fragrance leans like a classic barbershop fragrance, but not like Azzaro Pour Homme. It's more like an Avon Wild Country one. It's floral, sweet, and musky. The honey, carnation, jasmine, and musk stand out the most to me. I can also detect lavender, tonka, and cedar. The cedar gives it a slight spiciness that keeps it interesting. I can also detect amber in the background tying the whole thing together.

I get about 10 hours out of this one. I have put it on my chest and went to sleep and it is still projecting when I wake up 7-8 hours later. It has arm's length projection and leaves a good scent bubble.

I honestly really like this one and still wear it. I don't care if it reminds people of their grandpa. I like it a lot. That is what matters the most when wearing fragrances. I think it has been successful for so long because it is different. A floral and sweet composition for men. That wasn't common back in the 80s. I plan on getting a cologne spray of it soon. By the way, yes it is a cologne concentration that lasts that long!

CK One Shock Review

Hello guys and gals! Sorry that I have not been posting as much lately. The holiday season is quite busy for me. Today I have a review of one most of you already know, CK One Shock. Probably my favorite cheapie of all time. Let's get into it!


Presentation
It's a big black bottle that doesn't come with a cap. The "SHOCK" on the front is rather shocking, and not in a good way. It looks pretty youthful. The sprayer is a beast though. The silver cap is vintage, the black(that I have) is the current one.


Notes

Top- Clementine, Lavender, Cucumber

Mid- Osmanthus, Black Pepper, Cardamon, Basil

Base- Amber, Patchouli, Cashmeran, White Musk, Tobacco


Scent

This fragrance opens up with a bit of cucumber, some sweet tobacco, and a cherry vibe with a dashing of pepper. When it dries down you get sweet tobacco and spice laying on a bed of warm and rich amber. Judging by the bottle this is a youthful fragrance, but this fragrance can be for any age. It's absolutely wonderful. It's sweet, spicy, and warming. I would drink this stuff if it wouldn't kill me. Just goes to show you how misleading a branding can be for a product. This is a sweet concoction of heavenly manna. Just try it already.

Longevity on me is 7-8 hours and projection is massive for the first two hours, then settle down to a 6 foot or so bubble and leaving a potent sillage trail. The vintage performs much better, but 25 bucks will buy you 200ml of this stuff. No, that is not a typo, 6.7oz. You can't beat that anywhere. Also, 2 or 3 sprays max gents, this thing projects for the first few hours heavily.

Regardless of the naysayers that say the new formulation is bad, I will still keep this in my collection. It's one of the few fragrances that I keep a backup bottle of. That is how much I love this one. This is my favorite casual dumb reach for the colder days.

That being said, this is a winter/late fall only fragrance. This thing will get sickly sweet in the heat. Best worn casually, but it could fit business casual perhaps, but not formal.

Surprising Sleepers 4: Playboy London

Hello ladies and gentleman! I hope today finds you in good health and joyful. Today I am covering a fragrance that I think is pretty decent for its price point, Playboy London. Yes, Playboy. I don't agree with the magazine either, but this is just a fragrance. So, let's get into it!



Presentation

Playboy London comes in a basic glass bottle with a navy blue sticker going around the bottle. One side features the Playboy bunny with the Union Jack (the UK flag) on it. The opposite side has a sketch in gold of Big Ben and the London Bridge and featuring the fragrance name and company in gold on it.

The cap is a cheap plastic and has an engraved Playboy bunny on the top. The atomizer is pretty bad, but it gets the job done.

Overall, I like the presentation. The sketches on the back are pretty cool.



Notes

Top- Pink Grapefruit, Mandarin, Galbanum

Mid- Rose, Cinnamon, Brandy, Toscanol(a molecule that is a substitute for herbals) 

Base- Tonka Bean, Virginian Cedar

Scent
London opens up with orange and something creamy, so I am guessing that is the tonka bean. Being closely followed by some brandy and cinnamon. I get a little greenness underneath it with some soft cedar.

The fragrance only lasts about 5 hours on me. It projects for about an hour. The scent bubble is maybe about 3 feet off the skin for the first 2 hours, after that, it is a skin scent.

Overall it smells pretty good. Considering this was only $5 for 50ML. You can get this over a can of Axe or Old Spice and it smells much better. This doesn't smell expensive, but it doesn't smell like something you would pay 5 bucks for. Smells maybe like something in the 40-50 dollar range. Which is much better than a can of Axe. So, if you forgot your decants while you are visiting the family during the holidays, this is a decent one in a pinch. I have actually received 2 compliments wearing this one.

This is a cooler weather fragrance. It is somewhat light for a winter fragrance, but it's good in the fall. It would be too sweet and sticky in the heat. The warmness from the cinnamon is great for fall anyway.

Pino Silvestre Review

Hello ladies and gentleman! I hope everyone is having a fantastic day! Today, I am reviewing something that was requested by a few people, Pino Silvestre. This is a classic fragrance that was first released in 1955. This fragrance has been around for quite a while and has a number of followers and haters. Let's get into it.


Presentation

Pino Silvestre is a pine based fragrance. The bottle is shaped like a pine cone (see image below). It's green resembling pine needles. The atomizer sprays a lot of juice, but it leaks as well, which isn't  a huge problem considering its price point.

Notes

Top- Juniper, Lavender, Bergamot, Lemon, Basil

Mid- Carnation, Clary Sage, Cumin, Geranium, Pine Needles

Base- Tonka, Amber, Musk, Oakmoss, Cedar


The Scent

Pino Silvestre opens up with a lemony pine smell. Very light and refreshing. Synthetic lemon, but natural smelling pine. It's more of a pine sap accord than the smell of pine needles. I really like the opening.

When it starts to dry down the oakmoss and herbal qualities come out. Normally, this is where a fragrance made in 1955 would show its age, but Pino manages to stay avoid that with the citrus top and pine sap.

When it is fully dried down the lemon fades out and the pine does tend to get this pine tar accord at times. I am not sure if it's the herbals mixing with the pine or what is causing that, but I notice it is much less prominent in the cooler weather. It gets a bit more of a dry aspect in the full dry down.

It pretty much smells like the name suggests, a pine forest. I actually like this one. I am not a fan of the pine tar note at times, but overall I like the fragrance. I love the outdoors and this one takes me there.

I still think this fragrance is better suited for 35+. Keep in mind, that I am 32 and wear this sometimes. So, wear what you think expresses your personality best.

This is a cooler weather fragrance, but can be worn on warmer days, just not warm ones. I would say anything over 60 Fahrenheit would be too much for this one. It's pretty casual and not for formal events at all.

The longevity is pretty good. I get around 7-8 hours with a solid 2 hours of projection. It also carries a pretty decent sillage trail.

Mugler Pure Malt Review

Hello ladies and gentleman! I hope everyone is doing well and smelling great! Today I have a full review for Thierry Mugler's Pure Malt from the A*Men line. My favorite from Mugler. Let's get into it!

Notes:

Top- Fruity Notes, Bergamot, Orange

Mid- Malt, Patchouli, Coffee, Cedar, Whiskey

Base- Peat, Vanilla, Amber, Musk


Pure Malt...There are so many things to say about this one, but I will try to keep it relatively short.

This is a masterpiece to me. Yes, it has been reformulated. I still get a good 8-9 hours with it and solid projection for up to 3.  It's not as boozy as the original, but it's still a great fragrance.

Sweet fruits, whiskey, coffee, and chocolate.  Gourmand, sweet, and a good dose of booze. The fruits make it sweet. The coffee adds to the warm characteristic. The standard chocolately patchouli that the A*Men line uses. This is a sweet boozy gourmand. It does that well.

One of my favorites in my collection, even in its reformulated state. Don't let the exaggerated reviews of it being weak dissuade you. It still performs very well. Just not as well as the original.

This is for colder weather only. Even now, this fragrance still packs a potent punch and would be super cloying in the heat. To me, this one is more casual, but it could be worn with business casual clothing. It's not safe for work for me, it smells too boozy. It's a great night out fragrance in the fall and winter.

Cerruti 1881 Review

Hello ladies and gents! I hope everyone had a fantastically fragrant day! Today I have a classic fragrance review for you, Cerruti 1881. One of my favorites in this genre. Let's get into it!

Notes:

Top- Lavender, Carnation, Galbanum, Cypress, Bergamot, Juniper, Elemi Resin

Mid- Vetiver, Ylang-Ylang, Rose, Lily of the Valley, Cassia

Base- Musk, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Oakmoss, Cedar, Pepper, Pine


As you can probably tell from the note breakdown, this fragrance is a classic one. Originally released in 1990. Cerruti is an Italian house and it's evident in this fragrance. It comes in a frosted glass bottle at the front and back with "1881" stamped on the front, with a smooth glass on the sides that says "Cerruti 1881". The cap is plastic. The atomizer is very good and distributes a good amount of fragrance.

The opening is what you might expect from these notes. A green aromatic fougere. It smells like an Italian forest, Yes, it does have that old school dry oakmoss vibe, but this one is not aggressive and in your face. It has some barbershop qualities to it, probably coming from the dry oakmoss/juniper and the spices with a powdery effect. It's not cloying, it somehow maintains a class to it while being relatively strong. This one does have a spicy aromatic composition and is very masculine.

As I said before this one reminds me of an Italian forest, granted I have never been to Italy, but this is what I imagine they would smell like in the summer. You can smell the oakmoss, cedar, lavender, and the pine very well. It's a great fragrance if you want to reminisce about walks in the forest.

This one lasts about 8 hours on me and projects for 3. it has a large scent bubble that lasts most of the life of the fragrance. People will smell this on you.

This fragrance is casual, but I think you could make it work with business casual, just not something formal. I would say that this is for more mature men, in both age and mentality. It has a classy old school vibe to it. This fragrance is best on warmer days, but you can make it work in the winter as well. I find it to be pretty versatile.

Overall, this is my favorite fragrance pre-2000s outside of Green Irish Tweed/Cool Water/Aspen or Moschino Uomo. I think it has stood the test of time, even though it does have a somewhat dated vibe, I think it still holds up well and is perfectly wearable today and I don't think it gets much love anymore and it should. One of the most underrated fougeres on the market.

Burberry House Review

Hello everyone, sorry for not posting for a few days. I hope everyone had a great weekend! Today I am going to give you a review on one of my favorite houses: Burberry. I have not tried all of their offerings, but I will include a short review of each one I have. Enjoy! As always feel free to hit that blue follow button to show your support!

Burberry is a British house founded in 1856. They are most notably known for their trench coats and signature tartan patterns. They were granted a royal warrant to make clothing for the royal family. They didn't create their first fragrance until 1981.

Now onto the fragrances...

Burberry London

I have mentioned this one in another review for my top fall cheapies of 2018. It's still an amazing fragrance. Sometimes I get the smell of wet leaves in the fall on the opening and other times I get a port wine type smell. On the dry down it smells like a Christmas tree sometimes and other times it smells just like Christmas memories. It's hard to describe and it's amazing how one fragrance can conjure up so many memories. This should be in every man's collection for the holiday season.

Burberry Touch For Men

This one I consider my signature fragrance. It's an easy dumb reach that works all year and for any situation. You can dress it up or down. Casually or formal. In the heat or in the cold. This one does it all.

A beautiful powdery violet leaf accented by some spice and soft musk. Clean, classy, and a workhorse. It's not original or groundbreaking, but it's an excellent fragrance for anything and a great one to start a collection off with. As a bonus, I get 8-9 hours with this with 2-3 of solid projection and a nice scent bubble until the 7th hour. I will keep this one in my collection forever.

Burberry Weekend

This one was not pleasant when I first purchased it. It was a blind buy and came off as a citronella cand;e (You know the ones that keep mosquitoes away?). Then I looked at the notes and saw it had ivy and lemon...and it created that vibe. While I don't find it as intolerable as I did at the start. It grew on me, but I still think it's the worst from the house (that I have tried), It's a decent summer casual scent for a barbeque or running errands. Weekend is a fitting name. It's also synthetic. It lasts about 5 hours for me. Overall not impressive, but not horrible either. I will not be repurchasing this one.

Burberry Brit(not pictured)

A spicy powdery rose. Slightly sweet, but still remains elegant. A nice fragrance overall. I plan on getting a full bottle soon. Like the others on this list...nothing groundbreaking, but still a solid fragrance. Longevity was around 7 hours with 2 of projection and a small scent bubble. Ladies seem to love this one.


Overall, Burberry is a great fragrance house that is often overlooked. London has some hype around it and Touch has received a bit as well. For the price paid on discounters they are very good value for the price paid.

Bvlgari Man in Black vs Bentley for Men Intense

Good morning everyone! I hope everyone had a safe and festive Halloween! Today I have a comparison between two fragrances that I see compared quite often and I wanted to answer the question...are they redundant? The short answer is no...

Let's take a look at the notes for each one first:

Bvlgari Man in Black:

Top- Tobacco, Spices, Rum
Mid- Leather, Tuberose, Iris
Base- Guaiac Wood, Benzoin, Tonka Bean

Bentley for Men Intense:

Top- Bergamot, Black Pepper, Bay Leaf
Mid- Clary Sage, Geranium, Cinnamon, Rum, Woody Notes
Base- Leather, Patchouli, Incense, Cedar, Benzoin

Now, as you see they both have rum and are spicy wood-based fragrances. They do not smell similar to my nose, but they can be used for some of the same situations.

Smell:

Bvlgari Man in Black(MiB for short from this point on) is a super spicy fragrance with a bit of rum and amber laying on a base of wood. It opens spicy and stays spicy through the life of the fragrance. The only real evolution to my nose is it gets a bit woodier on the dry down with a slight touch of sweetness.

Bentley for Men Intense(BMI from this point on) is more of a leathery rum fragrance with a bit of smoky incense and some cinnamon and pepper for spice. It opens really powerfully on the rum and leather notes, then dries down to a woody fragrance with incense and a bit of spice.

Longevity:

Both of these fragrances last a long time on my skin, but I would say BMI wins in this category. It projects a lot further and lasts about 2 hours longer on me. They both do very well in this category though.

Versatility:

BMI is a dressed up fragrance for me. For suit and ties and possibly business casual only. It has a lot more class and sophistication than MiB.

BMI is more along the lines of a niche fragrance and MiB is closer to a designer, so MiB is more of a mass appealer than BMI.

MiB wins this category because I think it can be worn casually, but not super casually. It can be used for dates as well, where BMI might be too polarizing for that.

Overall:

So, are they redundant? No, I think they both have a unique character and do not smell alike, they are only in the same category of woody-spicy fragrances. Both are a steal at their price point. If I had to choose one or the other I would go with BMI. I just like it's complexity more.

Hello everyone, I hope this day finds you well. Today I have a review of an amazing fall/winter fragrance, Bvlgari Man in Black.

Let's start off with the notes:

Top- Tobacco, Spices, Rum
Mid- Leather, Tuberose, Iris
Base- Guaiac Wood, Benzoin, Tonka Bean

This fragrance packs a punch, folks. To me, this is what Spicebomb wanted to be(Yes, I still love Spicebomb as well, but MiB is better for me). This is a rum-laden and spicy masculine bomb. In fact, I can't pick up on anything other than the rum, spices, leather, tobacco, and guaiac wood. I don't get tuberose or iris at all. I don't see much change throughout the life of the fragrance besides it becoming a bit sweeter on the dry down(that is probably where the tonka comes in with the rum) with the guaiac wood, but it still remains very spicy.

As I said, this fragrance packs a punch. It is potent. I get around 9-10 hours of longevity and 2 hours of good projection. After those two hours is still leaves a good 3-foot scent bubble until about 8 hours into it. The last 2 are relatively close to the skin.  It is an EDP concentration as well.

This is a great fragrance that I think every man should own. It's super masculine. Pretty versatile in the cold weather. It can be dressed up or down. I wouldn't say to wear this at all in over 50-degree Fahrenheit temperatures. You might choke people out.
